Ways You Can Help

Oregon African American Museum Kick-off reception on May 13, 2009 at Mahonia Hall in Salem, OR where Gwen Carr explains to attendees where African Americans have had a historic presence in Oregon.

Volunteer Your Time & Talents

The mission of Oregon African American Museum (OAAM) is to educate the public about African American history in Oregon by collecting, preserving, interpreting and exhibiting material evidence of the African American experience.

Your donation of time, talents, skills, materials, and anything else to help with this project, is just as valuable as a monetary donation, so please consider joining and supporting in this way. Contact Willie Richardson (503) 540-4063.

Donate African American Historical Items

We would treasure any donations with a particular connection to Oregon Black pioneers and any of the eras of Oregon History. Perhaps your family has handed down special relics or items that would be perfect to display in the Oregon African American Museum.

Historical items of this nature are also referred to as Black or African Americana Memorabilia. Although many people consider Black Memorabilia to be offensive and insulting, many of the big-time collectors of Black or African American memorabilia are, in fact, of African American heritage. Celebrity collectors include Oprah Winfrey, Spike Lee, Bill Cosby and Billy Dee Williams.

Often these collectors look for and acquire even the most offensive and slave related pieces because it's a way to remember and preserve the past, and to make sure that history is not repeated.

Photographs, historical documents as well as other tangible items from the last 150 years that are relevant to Oregon are all to be considered a valuable part of the OAAM collection.

From 1896 until 1907, Adolphus D. Griffin published The New Age, a weekly newspaper for African Americans, in Portland, Oregon. During most of his tenure, the paper was the sole voice for a small but vibrant community. Consequently, The New Age offers important insight into race relations in the Pacific Northwest at the turn of the twentieth century. It also can be seen as a snapshot of African American life. Culture, religion, education, migration, politics, job opportunities and more were discussed regularly in the newspaper.
